South King County Discipline Coalition has created a Summer Reading Program, which will build confidence, comprehension, and literacy skills for black and brown children. We will give each child a book that is culturally relative to them in order to build their home library. 30-40% of low-income black and brown children are reading at grade level by 3rd grade. If by 4th grade black and brown students aren't proficient in reading they're more likely to not graduate and fall into the school to prison pipeline. Instead of funding interventions states are funding prisons. South King County Discipline Coalition realizes school discipline happens in the early years of school for black and brown children. Being suspended often or removed from a class room any time during learning affects the educational growth for children. Our Summer Reading Program will create an intervention that will close the literacy gap and inspire young readers to keep reading.
