Tiny Tots Development Center is in the 98118-zip code, one of the most diverse areas in Seattle. It is a highly urbanized area with very little green space. The 98118-zip code is a high crime area there are frequent shootings and other violent crime. This makes visiting the few local playgrounds, such as Othello Playground and Seward Park, unsafe. In fact, these are often the sites of violent crimes. It is now one of the few neighborhoods in Seattle in which BIPOC is the majority of the population.
BIPOC children historically score lower on tests starting in elementary school and persisting through high school. An outdoor classroom benefits the children of Tiny Tots Development Center by allowing access to a natural environment. Regular and safe access to nature should not be determined by race, income, identity, ability, or postal code.
Exposure to nature benefits children in many ways, including better academic performance, enhanced attention, Increased engagement and enthusiasm, and improved behavior. (Children’s Nature Network)
The new outdoor classroom will benefit the children enrolled at Tiny Tots Helen Hicks and Tiny Tots Main this year and in the years to come.
