Mission

Within one of the most diverse zip codes in the US, TTDC's mission is to provide stimulating and enriching programs to at-risk, Low Socioeconomic Status, BIPOC ages 0-12 years old, providing a quality ECE and out-of-school time programs to families that they could not normally afford.

Description

Established in 1969, Tiny Tots Development Center (TTDC) provides childcare services, preschool, and early childhood education in a nurturing environment. Tiny Tots was founded by Mrs. Helen Hicks, who opened the center to fill a need in her community. The children in her neighborhood lacked quality care while their parents worked.
Two-income households were commonplace in the black community long before the nation as a whole due to the struggle to make ends meet. Despite this, there were no established methods of caring for the children while both parents worked. Helen struggled with finding care for her own children. She arranged care on a day-by-day basis, determining who would watch her children based on who in her family or community was available to watch them. There was no consistency in the lives of her children, so she decided to provide it for them and some of the other children in her community by opening a childcare center in her home.
Today TTDC is run by two of Mrs. Hick's daughters and has grown to five sites. The newest is our Othello site, located at the brand-new Othello Square development on the corner of Othello and MLK.
