I’m fundraising for Casa Latina because I believe in their powerful movement to advance the rights and dignity of Latino day and domestic workers in King County, WA. There is no better example than this year's historic legislative victory for a statewide Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights -- a deeply satisfying win for all the hardworking community members and allies who have been speaking truth to power over the course of many years in this struggle.
Casa Latina is a nonprofit organization that builds power and well being among Latino immigrant workers through employment opportunities, education programs, and community organizing -- connecting workers with fair and dignified jobs, offering year round ESL and job skills classes, and organizing in strategic ways for stronger labor protections.
Casa Latina's Popular Education model goes way beyond simply offering direct services. Casa Latina supports community members to have agency in their own lives, and to find their own voices as leaders and advocates, helping to shape a more just and equitable future for all immigrants. In managing our ESL and Computer Classes, Somos Vecinos language exchange program, and gender-based violence prevention workshops, I have been privileged to witness the distinct power of learning in community, building on foundational skills, supporting one another with respect and compassion, and channeling collective wisdom into positive action.
This year for GiveBIG, I invite you to join me at whatever level you can manage in amplifying this vital work. Every contribution builds power, opens doors, and honors the leadership and resilience of immigrant workers.
¡Mil gracias!
