ANIMALS DESERVE A VOICE!

Desa was allegedly dumped as a puppy at her previous owners' property two and half years ago. In August 2022, Desa had a litter of puppies. Unfortunately, Desa's owner didn't properly feed Desa or her puppies and occasionally threw table scraps out the front door for them to eat. The amount of food provided was insufficient, and poor Desa and her litter of puppies were starving, ultimately leaving Desa to venture out for more food. As a result, in September 2022, Desa killed the neighbor's chickens.

The owner of the chickens generated an animal complaint resulting in Desa facing being euthanized. Desa was declared a dangerous dog due to the neglect and abuse she had suffered by her owner.

The investigating deputy followed up with the dog owner in December and noticed all the puppies were gone; however, Desa was outside shivering inside a metal crate in below-freezing temperatures.

The deputy threatened to charge the dog owner with animal cruelty if he didn't provide a better shelter for Desa. During this time, the deputy questioned if a declared dangerous dog could be rehomed to a rescue; however, it was the belief no animal rescue would want to take on the responsibility of a declared dangerous dog.

CAN THIS DOG BE SAVED?

Red Waggin' has saved many dogs that due to their abusive or neglectful environments.  Of all the hundreds of dogs rehome and adopted through Red Waggin' we have only had to euthanize one dog. Dogs are resilient with love! Desa is one of these dogs.

The dog owner eventually moved Desa to a dark-covered shelter with some straw; however, it did not completely block the wind, rain, and snow, and it was extremely cold inside. The deputy told the dog owner he needed to fix these shelter concerns and would follow up with another visit.

When the deputy returned to see if the requirements were fulfilled, she noticed Desa had lost significant weight. The dog owner claimed he didn't have enough money to purchase dog food and was having trouble walking out to Desa's shelter because he had hurt his back. The deputy criminally cited the dog owner and demanded that he purchase Desa dog food. The owner stated he didn't want Desa euthanized because she was a good dog and would surrender Desa to a better home if possible.

DESA RESCUED & SPAYED!

The deputy was determined to remove Desa from her awful situation and find her a forever home that would give her the love and attention she deserved. The deputy contacted her supervisor, an avid dog-lover, for more options. He recommended she contact Red Waggin’ Rescue after previous positive experiences he encountered himself. The deputy also contacted the prosecutors' office to have Desa's dog dangerous dog title removed.

On March 5th 2023, Desa's owner voluntarily surrendered her to Red Waggin’ Rescue. When Red Waggin’ arrived to rescue Desa, she growled at our approach. The dog owner took a slip lead and forced her out and into a crate. She was transported  directly to our vet, where she was spayed the next day.
