Hello, my name is Huda, and I joined Team Read because I wanted to help younger students improve their reading while building leadership skills. I’ve always enjoyed working with kids, and when I found out that Team Read gives teens the opportunity to mentor elementary students, I knew I wanted to be part of it. I also liked that it would help me grow my confidence and communication skills in a real-world setting.

Since joining, I’ve learned a lot not just about tutoring, but about patience, creativity, and how important it is to show up for someone consistently. Each week, I’ve seen my reader grow more confident and excited about reading. I’ve learned how to adjust my approach when something doesn’t work and how to celebrate progress, even when it feels small. The skills I’ve built here will definitely help me in the future.

One moment that really stuck with me was when my reader worked hard on a book she loved and ended up reading it twice just because she enjoyed it so much. She was so proud of herself, and it reminded me of how powerful reading can be when it feels fun and exciting. She also loved the small rewards we used, like the prize for finishing 50 books and the colored hearts we put on our tracking sheet like green for reading with expression. These small things kept her motivated and engaged every single time.

I’ve always read to my siblings, so seeing my reader’s joy brought back those same feelings of connection and happiness. Team Read deserves to be funded because it helps kids grow not just as readers, but as learners. It gives us all the chance to make a real difference.
