What We're Doing
As part of our Sustainable Food Program, we are building an organic garden to help the elder care home in Esquipulas, Guatemala, become more self-sufficient and reduce their food expenses by growing their own fruits and vegetables.
Using the decolonization model, our Sustainable Food Program improves food security for impoverished elders, and reduces the burden of caring for impoverished and abandoned elders.
In Esquipulas, Guatemala, we support the elder care home, Hogar Betania, which is overseen by The Congregation of Martha and Mary. The nuns in this congregation have taken vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and want to build an organic garden, but do not have the funds to do so.
Our program is designed to not just help the elder care home, but to spread the knowledge of organic gardening across Guatemala.
Our program:
- Provides training and tools to help the nuns reduce their food expenses, improve food security, and become more self-reliant.
- Enables the nuns to spend more of their monetary donations on the home’s maintenance.
- Trains young women in the congregation’s Formation Program on organic gardening, so they can use these skills as nuns in service to other Guatemalans.
- Trains local children and community members who assist the nuns with the garden on organic gardening.
100% of your donations to this program will support this organic garden!
