Who We Are
We help to rescue homeless and abandoned elders in Nepal and Guatemala, then take them to an elder care home we support, and give them a new family, a safe place to live, and unconditional love for the rest of their lives.
We are The Global Humanity Initiative and we dream of a world where every elder has food and a home. Our mission is to improve the lives of impoverished and homeless elders around the world through food and housing support. We cherish our elders regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual identity, or sexual preference.
Why We Exist
A quick internet search for "granny dumping" will give you the global highlights: All around the world, adult children, overwhelmed with the care of their aging parent and feeling they have nowhere to turn for support, dump their parent in the street.
Doña Maria del Carmen, Esquipulas, Guatemala: Suffering from dementia and a malformed left hand, and unable to care for herself, Doña Maria was abandoned in her home by her two daughters. By the time her neighbors found her, she was bed-ridden and malnourished. After she recovered in the hospital, she was brought to the elder care home where she learned to walk again. Hearing that their mother was in the elder care home, the daughters moved into her house. They have never been to visit her.
Mahili, Pharping, Nepal: After her husband died and her daughter married, her stepson sold the family property and put Mahili into the streets. Mahili was homeless for two years before her daughter finally found her. She brought Mahili to live with her in her in-laws' home, but her husband and his parents said Mahili couldn't live with them, and if she couldn't leave her mother (as is Nepali tradition) she would be kicked out of the home along with Mahili. Her daughter made her choice: She put her mother back out on the streets to live.
Our History
In 2017, our President and Founder, Alicia Jean Demetropolis, spent three months in Nepal, offering her assistance in elder care. She quickly discovered the plight these elders face, and how easily the locals turn a blind eye to the old people living in the streets. She started The Global Humanity Initiative with a goal to work in Third World countries, bringing homeless and abandoned elders to safety, and to give them a new family and unconditional love for the rest of their lives. Her journey is documented in her memoir Drowning in Now: A Search for God and Humanity at the Top of the World.
