Affectionately referred to as "Rainbow Preschool" by our daughter, the Community School of West Seattle has been like a second home to her since she began attending in September, 2024. Every community space within the school is both vibrant and warm - our child's classroom environment has always felt somehow both energetic and joyful, but also grounded and calm. For our child, this place is pure magic.
Choosing CSWS was an easy decision for our queer family. As the only preschool in West Seattle we could find that was outwardly LGBTQIA+ affirming, play based, and rooted in equity and inclusivity, we knew it was the right fit for our family from the moment we stepped into the door.
During a time when the rights and safety of countless people and identities are under direct threat, CSWS has been a safe haven for so many (including our own family). The community at CSWS truly cares about one another and about creating an environment where everyone's identity is celebrated and honored- and where everyone is encouraged to come as they are and explore and express themselves fully.
CSWS has also supported important mutual aid work. Most recently, CSWS hosted a week-long free community closet on-site, open to the surrounding community. Conversations aligned with living out values of collective care and creating as much safety as possible in the community are ongoing, and I am proud to be a part of CSWS.
CSWS's commitment to neurodiversity inclusive environments has also benefited our child- who has some sensory specific needs- directly. We have never been concerned that those needs (or any others) would go unmet at CSWS. Our child has directly benefited from on-site speech therapy, and from the skillful guidance of the "child embodiment coach" from Children in Bloom who spent considerable time in each classroom last year. I truly believe that these partnerships benefit everyone.
I am devoted to supporting CSWS not only because it is a school deeply aligned with our family's values- but also because our child feels truly at home at CSWS. She once told me that "I love my school because I have so many of my people there". Upon further exploration, it was clear that what she meant was that she considers her teachers and many of her peers family. There is nothing more heartwarming for a parent to hear.
Help me in supporting this amazing school! Make a donation today to increase capacity for programs and partnerships that set CSWS apart and ensure groundedness in collective care, safety and inclusivity!
