The Talanoa of Hope Framework is a Pasifika-centered, culturally responsive curriculum designed to advance social-emotional learning (SEL), educational equity, and student success. Rooted in the ancestral practice of talanoa—open, respectful, and relational dialogue—the framework promotes belonging, strengthens student–adult and peer relationships, and supports students’ social, emotional, and academic development. By centering cultural identity, shared storytelling, and trust-building practices, Talanoa of Hope addresses systemic barriers faced by historically underserved students and creates inclusive learning environments that foster resilience, self-efficacy, engagement, and improved educational outcomes.
At its core, the Talanoa of Hope Framework elevates student voice, affirms cultural identity, and strengthens relational trust as essential conditions for learning and well-being. Through guided talanoa discussions, reflective practices, and culturally grounded learning experiences, students build critical thinking skills, develop confidence in self-expression, and strengthen their ability to envision and pursue meaningful academic and life pathways.
More than a standalone curriculum, Talanoa of Hope creates inclusive learning environments where students feel seen, valued, and empowered. By centering culture, community, and hope, the framework supports social-emotional development, fosters a sense of belonging, and reinforces students’ strengths and agency. In doing so, it enables young people to honor their stories, build resilience, and carry forward a legacy of possibility that supports long-term educational success.
Terminology:
