There are hard problems that we don't know how to solve. Hunger or food insecurity is not one of them.
There is no shortage of food. We have enormous wealth. Yes, it is concentrated in the hands of a few, but it is there. We know what policies work. We have passionate, talented people working tirelessly to end hunger. But hunger persists in our communities. In fact, hunger has been rising over the last few years.
Our systems have failed us. Our legislators, especially at the federal level, have failed us. Our policies have failed us. It is up to us to support each other and build movements to bring about change. It is up to us to envision and build a more just and sustainable world without hunger.
It may sound like a big dream. It is. But it reminds me of a famous Chinese proverb that says, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." I'm inviting you to take that first step today by supporting HIP as part of the GiveBIG campaign this year.
At HIP, we not only provide nutritious meals for people struggling to put food on their tables, but also provide cooking/nutrition education and food justice workshops to build power and advocate for policy solutions that address the root causes of hunger. The picture above depicts one of our Senior Community Meal program participants and me advocating for anti-hunger policies in Olympia earlier this year.
If you donate before the end of the day on May 5th, you can double your impact with HIP's $20,000 matching donation.
Last year, HIP served over 186,000 meals, despite federal uncertainty. We can, and we do need to do more. There is a much greater need than what we can support right now. That is why we are asking for your support today. Your support will not just provide healthy meals for children, seniors, and people experiencing homelessness in our communities, but will also allow us to advocate for policies and budgets that can end hunger.
Thank you in advance for your support!
