Carols & Connection: A Holiday Outreach by NAWMBA Seattle

Every December, while the city glows with lights and families gather in warmth, many seniors across our community are quietly spending the holidays alone. In nursing homes, memory-care units, rehabilitation centers, and low-income senior housing, the season can feel less like celebration and more like isolation. For some, their loved ones live far away. For others, age, illness, or mobility challenges keep them separated from the world outside their doors.

Carols & Connection, NAWMBA Seattle’s annual holiday outreach, was created to bring joy, dignity, and companionship to these seniors during the most tender time of the year. What began as a small caroling visit has blossomed into a deeply meaningful tradition—one powered by music, compassion, and the belief that human connection can restore hope.

Last year, our volunteers walked into a memory-care home ready to sing, but what happened next revealed the extraordinary power of presence. As we began “Silent Night,” a woman who had been withdrawn all morning lifted her head and started softly humming along. A nurse whispered with emotion, “She hasn’t responded like this in months.”

In another room, a gentleman who once directed a church choir raised his trembling hand to keep time with our singing. When the final note faded, he leaned forward and said through tears, “Thank you for remembering us this Christmas.”

Moments like these are the heart of Carols & Connection.

This December, NAWMBA Seattle is expanding our outreach so we can serve even more seniors. With requests already coming in from facilities across the region, our volunteers will be visiting multiple nursing homes, adult-family homes, senior apartments, and low-income housing communities. We bring Christmas carols, conversation, and care packages—but more importantly, we bring the gift of presence.

Our care packages are prepared with dignity and comfort in mind. They typically include:

• Warm socks or gloves
• Holiday treats and snacks
• Personal-care essentials
• A handwritten encouragement card
• A thoughtful small gift

For many seniors, these are not just items—they are reminders that someone cares. More than anything, we sit with them. We listen to their memories. We talk about their families, their lives, and their favorite holiday traditions. Seniors often share stories they haven’t told in years, because no one has asked in a long time.

One resident, Mr. L., gently held his gift bag last year and told us:

“My wife passed away several years ago, and my children live across the country. I honestly didn’t expect anyone to visit this Christmas. When you sang… it felt like a warm light came back into this place.”

His words captured the very mission of Carols & Connection.

This outreach is not simply about music—it is about restoring connection, honoring dignity, and bringing joy to those who need it most. Many seniors we meet have dedicated their lives to raising families, working hard, serving their communities, or caring for others. Now, in this later season of life, they deserve presence, kindness, and a reminder that they are still valued.
