Support young advocates for GiveBIG 2023

My mom and dad have been foster parents since the day I left home for college. They initially became foster parents when they learned a relative was in the foster care system and it was a way to bring my cousin to our home. But it didn't end there. Fast forward more than 10 years and our extended family of foster bothers and sisters has grown immensely. I remember by father giving away my foster sister at her wedding and my father teaching so many of my foster brothers how to drive a car, fix things around the house, work in the yard, ride a bike, and so many other life long lessons. Our four bedroom yellow house in the country has been home to so many and means so much to so many. A few years ago when I was presented with an opportunity to serve on the board of The Mockingbird Society, it was a no brainer for me. The work continues and so does my service.

I am a supporter of The Mockingbird Society, an advocacy organization dedicated to transforming the foster care system and ending youth homelessness. Mockingbird partners with youth and young adults with lived experience in foster care and homelessness to elevate their voices and advocate for change within the systems impacting them most. 

In partnership, Mockingbird has won 57+ major policy reforms in Washington state, changing the outcomes for over 200,000 young people and prompting more than $252 million in state investment in services and support. In the process, youth advocates develop critical life and professional skills, as well as higher levels of confidence—feeling empowered to fight for change.
