Federal Cuts Disrupt Citizenship and Computer Classes for Adults in King County

$3,745

raised by 24 people

$20,000 goal

Help us raise $20,000 to Continue Citizenship and Computer Classes for the Fall.

On the afternoon of April 28th, we received devastating news: effective immediately, all 200,000 AmeriCorps members nationwide are being placed on administrative hold due to sudden federal funding cuts.

This decision directly impacted Literacy Source. Two of our instructors who teach our Citizenship and Beginning Computer Skills classes are AmeriCorps members. We had also planned to welcome three more AmeriCorps members this Fall to help us expand our programs.

As a result of this abrupt decision, we’ve had to make difficult budget decisions, and reassess the classes we can afford to offer in the Fall, namely removing 1 Citizenship and 1 Computer Class.

With your help, we can fund these classes for the Fall and allow us time to come up with a more permanent funding solution to staff these classes moving forward.

How Literacy Source Helps Students Become U.S. Citizens

Students enroll in one of our Citizenship classes for as long as it takes to learn the English and Civics necessary to pass their naturalization exam. In addition to the classes, we provide one-on-one tutoring and have a Citizenship Program Manager that helps students with the entire process, from filing their first paperwork to being present during their naturalization ceremony.

Becoming a U.S. citizen for our students is often one of their biggest accomplishments. They feel a sense of security and belonging once they are naturalized and have done the hard work of learning the language and history of the United States to do so.

One student recently shared,

" I was a student for less than 6 months when I went in for my citizenship interview. Erik [Citizenship Instructor]  taught me well, I studied at home, and Cory [Citizenship Program Manager]  helped me with all the paperwork. The day of my interview I was so scared. Cory came with me. My interview was only 10 minutes and I passed everything! Cory was there with me when I took my oath- becoming a United States Citizen! In fact, my whole class that quarter became citizens. We had a big celebration. I passed because Literacy Source supported me. It’s the best place to learn!"

How Literacy Source Helps Students with Digital Literacy

Literacy Source offers Basic Computer Skills classes along with teaching digital literacy skills in all of our classes. Our Basic Computer Skills class helps adults learn to navigate a web browser, write an email, use Zoom and more.

 A student recently shared,

" I am learning, google. I am learning how to write an email. I still have a lot to learn, but I am becoming more confident in things I couldn't do before."

-James, Basic Computer Skills student

Help us fill the gap and ensure our Fall classes move forward with these critical classes and without interruption to our students.

Your support today means a great deal to us and changes the lives of our students and our community as whole.
