Benedict House provides emergency beds for 24 single men experiencing homelessness. In addition, the shelter provides 4 medical respite beds for those needing time to recover after medical treatment. We offer clean and sober living arrangements in a physically and emotionally safe, dormitory-style environment. Sheets, towels, and toiletries are all provided along with access to showers, laundry, and locked storage.
Our Impact: Harvey's Story
Harvey, nearly 60 years old, came to Benedict House from the local hospital following a near-stroke and subsequent loss of housing due to medical complications. He arrived requiring several medical appointments for both hospital follow up as well as general health stabilization and functioning. While his medical state slowly improved over much trial and error, his outlook always remained both positive and upbeat despite his many concerns and struggles.
Here at the shelter, we were able to secure his transportation to and from all appointments, get him set up with successful and stable caregiving services, establish a successful primary care provider and specialty providers for both immediate needs and general check-ups, secure ambulation aid to improve his mobility and reduce his risk of falls, and eventually get him stable and secure enough in his medical care that he was able to see his providers for annual check-ups.
After just over a year and half of hard work and dedication, Harvey was able to discharge to his own apartment with all the necessary medical needs in place to ensure that he maintained his independence and stability and was able to resume his life successfully.
How we serve our neighbors at Benedict House
Residents utilize the common room and kitchen where they can use the computers, read books, watch TV, and drink coffee in a warm, welcoming space. Meals are offered three times a day for all residents to reduce food barriers and encourage health and stability. Benedict House has a full kitchen where volunteers from the local community are encouraged to come and assist in providing evening meals. All meals are served family-style in the common area.
Mail can also be received to reduce barriers toward pursuing stability. Our staff utilize a team approach when providing support for our residents as we know that each man arrives with different challenges and concerns. Once the initial need for shelter is provided, our staff – working with a case manager – can start assisting the resident with any other issues they face.
Our services include access and assistance with establishing income, health insurance, medical and dental care, legal aid, substance use treatment, mental health care, and permanent housing. Residents are encouraged to use these services with consistency to support them in securing safe and stable housing.
