I am proud to be Hawaiian! I was born into a family that carries this heritage, though I grew up in Washington. From a young age, I’ve always felt a deep longing to connect with my culture. My papa taught me so much about Hawaiian values, traditions, and the importance of ʻohana, giving me a strong foundation, but I knew it was my kuleana (responsibility) to continue learning and growing on my own. I first began dancing hula in high school and continued through college with Hawaiian and Pacific Islander clubs, always seeking ways to honor my roots and deepen my understanding of the dances, chants, and stories that connect us to our ancestors.

One way I share my pride in my heritage is through my work at the Portland Winterhawks, where I helped organize and plan our Pacific Islander Game last season, bringing together different community groups, cultural diversity and representation, and performances in a unique space to celebrate and share knowledge within the Portland sports community.

After moving to Vancouver, WA four years ago and completing my Master’s degree from Washington State University, I finally discovered Kaleinani o ke Kukui through their beautiful “4 Days of Aloha” festival at Esther Short Park in 2021. Attending this event was one to remember! The music, performances, food, community vendors, and of course the highlight of the night-  Ekolu concert left me feeling connected, inspired, and welcomed. Last September, I was blessed to officially join hula classes with the hālau, stepping into a community that feels like home. Through my participation, I’ve learned not only the language and dance but also the deeper meanings behind them, and I’ve grown in my connection to Hawaiian culture, my ʻohana, and the values that guide us.

The Ke Kukui Foundation is more than a cultural center, it is a place of learning, connection, and belonging. Through their programs, events, and classes, they preserve and share Hawaiian traditions, ensuring that future generations have access to our culture and heritage. I am deeply grateful to be part of this ʻohana, and I’m asking for your support so that Ke Kukui Foundation can continue to thrive. Every donation helps sustain their programs, share aloha, and keep Hawaiian culture alive for our community. Mahalo nui loa for considering a donation and for walking alongside me on this journey.
