VASHON SENIOR CENTER: Enriching the lives of older adults on Vashon and Maury Island

This year we celebrate the Vashon Senior Center Village: Making aging at home on Vashon easier.

Vashon-Maury Island is both rural and isolated. With a median age of 53 years, Vashon-Maury Island has one of the highest percentages of older adults in King County. Nearly half of Vashon's 11,000 people are 55 or over. Over 25% are 65 and older.

Vashon Senior Center Village: Making aging at home easier for Vashon seniors.

A love of independent living becomes a hardship when we’re injured, sick or frail. Senior Center Village volunteers step up to assist islanders, creating connections that foster support and longevity - connections that are needed more than ever as we age. 

Vetted Village volunteers support Vashon seniors with:

                • Chore help at home
                • Friendly visits and Check-in calls
                • Reading to seniors with low vision

Age-old wisdom says that everyone is cheered by giving. 

Yet it’s often hard to ask for help. The Village encourages and celebrates both giving and receiving.

It is not a sign of weakness to ask for help – it’s a sign of strength. The strength of someone who knows and values who they are. Someone who recognizes that asking for help is a gift given to those who wish to help. Even simple acts of sharing can have profound benefits. 

While the Senior Center Village is partially funded by King County VSHSL and Granny's grants, donations from individuals are crucial.
