Toxic-Free Future advocates for the use of safer products, chemicals, and practices through advanced research, advocacy, grassroots organizing, and consumer engagement to ensure a healthier tomorrow.

Description

Toxic-Free Future (TFF) is a nonprofit research and advocacy organization that advances the use of safer products, chemicals, and practices through science, organizing, advocacy, and consumer engagement. Our unique niche is our ability to conduct strategically focused, original scientific research and testing that guides and supports our government advocacy and consumer campaigns. We have achieved incredible marketplace wins while also influencing state and federal policy to protect against toxic chemicals contaminating our homes, water, communities, wildlife, and even breast milk.

By conducting original research, winning state and federal policy reform, and holding corporations accountable, we achieve bold solutions that protect the health of people, wildlife, and our planet from harmful chemicals and pollution. We believe that all people and other species have the right to a healthy environment. Equity and environmental justice are at the core of our work. We investigate and reveal the devastating and disproportionate impacts of chemical production, use, and disposal on workers and communities of color. Our positions are developed from a careful review of science and grounded in public policy that promotes a toxic-free environment for all.

Here is how we are building a Toxic-Free Future for all:

NEW HEALTH PROTECTIONS

Toxic-Free Future takes on classes of chemicals that are widely used, extremely toxic, and have the potential to significantly impact the health of people, especially children, and the environment. Our top priorities are highly persistent PFAS chemicals, toxic flame retardants, hormone-disrupting phthalates, and neurotoxic lead.

Since one of the largest uses of PFAS is in food packaging, ending the use of PFAS in food packaging is the best way to reduce the contamination of drinking water, food, and wildlife. We’ve been leading a multi-faceted campaign to win government and retailer actions to stop using PFAS. We’ve won in Washington, achieving the fastest PFAS timeline in the nation towards banning PFAS in uses such as apparel, firefighter turnout gear, waxes, and polishes.

PROTECTING CONSUMERS FROM CHEMICALS IN EVERYDAY PRODUCTS

Toxic-Free Future's Mind the Store campaign works with major retailers to stop making and selling products containing chemicals that harm health and the environment.

As of today, Toxic-Free Future has secured commitments from 22 food retailers to reduce or eliminate PFAS in food packaging at more than 140,000 stores worldwide.

More than 6 million people will benefit from our work to protect public health and drinking water, resulting from Washington state adopting PFAS drinking water standards.

Washington’s laws banning PFAS in food packaging and firefighting foam have been replicated in nine other states, protecting drinking water and food for nearly 100 million people nationwide.

SAFER FOOD & WATER

Every day, communities are exposed to toxic chemicals in our food, contributing to the chemical load our bodies carry. We are working with companies and policymakers to protect drinking water and food from cancer-causing and hormone-disrupting chemicals.

CLEAN AND HEALTHY WATERS

Getting toxics out of products also gets them out of the environment. Iconic species like salmon and orcas are declining. Many of the toxic chemicals polluting Washington's waters and wildlife come from the same sources as the chemicals found in humans: consumer products that people use every day.
