Every day, people are exposed to harmful chemicals through the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the products we use at home—chemicals that can cause cancer, disrupt hormones, harm fertility, and impact children’s development. These exposures aren’t accidents, they’re the result of systems that allow toxic chemicals into everyday life.

For 45 years, Toxic-Free Future has been working to change those systems so that we can prevent harm before it starts. Since our earliest days fighting pesticide spraying along roadsides as Washington Toxics Coalition to the national force we are today, we’re working to eliminate harmful chemicals and plastics from our bodies, products, and the environment.

What we do

We combine science, policy, and market pressure to stop toxic pollution at its source:

• Advancing strong laws that keep dangerous chemicals out of our air, water, food, and everyday products

• Producing independent research to uncover toxic chemicals in products and support policymakers and decision makers in making an impact

• Holding companies accountable to eliminate harmful chemicals—transforming products on shelves nationwide

Our impact  

• Prevented more than 30,000 gallons of PFAS firefighting foam from polluting drinking water in Washington state. 

• Passed Washington’s first-in-the-nation ban on all bisphenols in thermal receipt paper, prompting 19 major retailers to restrict these harmful chemicals nationwide.

• Passed a first-in-the-nation ban on all formaldehyde releasing chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products in Washington.
