Mission

The North Central Kiwanis Memorial Fund supports charitable services for children and adults who live with disabilities. Our primary project is Kiwanis Camp Casey. We support the camper's independence and ability to experience summer fun they would typically not be able to experience without the assistance of the camp. We champion leadership development and maturity advancement of our counselors. We work cooperatively with our community and greater Kiwanis family to accomplish our mission.

Description

Kiwanis Camp Casey is a week-long summer camp for children ages 6-17 who are challenged by physical limitations. Sponsored by the North Central Seattle Kiwanis Club for over 80 years, the camp is staffed entirely by volunteers. Located at the Fort Casey Conference Center, next to the Fort Casey State Park on Whidbey Island in the old WWII barracks, now owned by Seattle Pacific University. The North Central Seattle Kiwanis club rents the facilities from SPU each summer. Camp provides an often much-needed respite for parent caregivers, a fun, safe camp experience for campers, often leading to improved independence and self-confidence. A wonderful consequence of the Casey experience is the independence and ability to communicate care needs our campers develop and carry with them into adulthood and more fully independent living. Leadership skills and personal growth are achieved for the high school, college-age counselors who often seek employment in the health care, education sector. All participants form an appreciation for the abilities and accomplishments of people of all abilities and backgrounds. Finally, friendship with service is achieved for the many local area Kiwanis clubs and volunteers who assist each year; Kiwanis Camp Casey is truly a special place for all involved!

After a year of digital camp and a year of day camp, Kiwanis Camp Casey will return back to the usual week-long overnight camp model. We are ecstatic to be partnering with our friends at Lions Camp Horizon in Blaine, WA who have given us a home while we wait for Fort Casey to return to full operations. We are looking forward to a week of having everyone together sharing meals, stories around the campfire, and camp songs! Kiwanis Camp Casey is provided completely free of charge for campers and their families. This means we are responsible for fundraising regarding use of facilities, meals, and programming throughout the week. We would like to provide continuing education money for volunteer nurses, many who have been working tirelessly to keep this camp running over the years. Additionally, money raised here will help to expand our efforts to provide a social peer-to-peer connection for our campers after they leave Casey with our efforts in the CREW club which meets monthly throughout the year to keep our Casey campers in touch and provide them with peer role models for their life after Casey.
