Mission
Habitat for Humanity envisions "a world where everyone has a decent place to live." Habitat works toward our vision by building strength, stability and self-reliance in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
Description
Victoria and Arryn struggled for many years to find a safe and secure home where they could raise their two daughters. Arryn, suffers from chronic health issues and their eldest daughter has special needs that make apartment living less than ideal. For the past year, the couple, with support from friends and family, has worked alongside Habitat staff and volutneers to build a home where theiry girls will thrive.
“I’ve never been homeless to the point of living in my car or on the streets, but I definitely know what it feels like to not have stable housing,” shared Victoria. “I don’t want my girls to ever feel that way. Owning a home of our own here in Oak Harbor means we can continue to be part of this community. I can stay at a job I love. I always figured at some point we’d have to move off-island because we couldn’t afford the rent anymore. Now I know we’ll be able to raise our girls here. That gives me a real sense of security.”
The couple both agree that the highlight of this experience has been the way the community has supported them. “There are so many people willing to help, even though I don’t know them,” said Aaron.
Now that their home is nearly complete, they are just waiting for the day when they finally become homeowners and move into their three-bedroom townhome in Oak Harbor.
Donations from supporters like you make this possible. We rely on our generous community for help with funding, volunteer labor, and donations of household goods to be sold in our Habitat Stores.
