Living Future's mission is to cultivate a society that is socially just, culturally rich, and ecologically restorative.

Description

Living Future is a global movement of changemakers dedicated to creating a built environment that is regenerative, equitable, and healthy. In a world marked by escalating climate disasters, social inequities, and ecological loss, we lead a global community that is fundamentally transforming our built environment and the way we build. Through our pioneering programs like the Living Building Challenge, the Living Product Challenge, our events membership, and educational programs, we challenge the industry to create buildings and products that restore ecosystems, nurture human health, and build vibrant, equitable communities.

Founded in 2011, we have Living Buildings transforming communities in five continents, a community of thousands of designers, manufacturers, builders and other changemakers collectively growing the practice of regenerative design, and community-centered building in over 42 countries. These efforts are the foundation of our vision to cultivate a society that is socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative  — and each building, product, and organization stands as a testament that a regenerative future isn’t just on the horizon—it’s already in motion.

Washington is where Living Future’s story began.

In Washington, Living Future certified projects set the standard for what’s possible, anchored our legacy of bold ideas, and gave rise to some of the world’s most visionary regenerative projects. Examples include:

  • Climate Pledge Arena (trimtab article) – the first Net Zero Carbon certified arena in the world
  • Bullitt Center (video) – the greenest commercial building in the world
  • PCC Community Markets (trimtab article) – the first LBC petal-certified grocery store
  • The BLOCK Project (trimtab article) – the first affordable housing project to achieve LBC certification

Thank you, Washington, for believing in a Living Future!
