A Tale of Two Women: Friendship Matters

When Sarah, a single woman in her 30s from the Midwest, moved to Seattle, she had hopes of new beginnings.  Yet, she found herself missing family in Illinois and Michigan.  Her annual visits to her grandmothers only deepened the loneliness she felt.  She longed for the wisdom, support, and strength of the hardworking, resilient generation her grandmothers represented.  Despite being a strong, modern woman of the digital age, Sarah yearned for that connection in Seattle.

Sarah lived with purpose, serving others, building a compassionate community, and experiencing life in all its fullness.  Genuine, humble, and kind, her big heart for humanity shone through in her interactions with strangers and friends alike.  Then, Sarah learned about Full Life Care's ElderFriends program, and everything changed

ElderFriends participant Barbie, a strong mature woman born and raised in Seattle had reached out to ElderFriends.  Much like the action figure sharing her name, Barbie inspires others with her charm, beauty, and wisdom, but she had started feeling alone.

Barbie had acquaintances and a friendly neighbor, but she missed having a close friend to talk to, celebrate holidays with, and share special moments.  When Barbie got the call from ElderFriends, everything changed

Barbie Meets Sarah

Barbie and Sarah were paired as ElderFriends in November of 2022.  After a few phone calls, they set a date to meet.  When Barbie opened her door, she found Sarah to be a friendly and kind woman with a giant smile and they began developing their friendship.

Despite their differences, they say the generational gap brings a unique spark to their relationship.

Last week Barbie and Sarah enjoyed their third Thanksgiving together through the program's annual meal delivery.  Together, they've found a meaningful, long-lasting friendship, and discovered the fullness of life that comes from a shared love of fellowship.

They now have their "person" to see the latest movies with (watching the Barbie Movie twice!), check out the local restaurants, celebrate holidays together, and find support when the world starts to seem unkind.

Their friendship matters.  The connection Barbie and Sarah created decreases the loneliness they once felt and their care for one another is evident, resembling a familial bond.

Life Can Change So Fast

“I was unexpectedly thrown into the role of caretaker and advocate when as a young man my son suffered a permanently disabling illness. Over the years I’ve been focused on advocating for his health care needs and keeping everyone informed and organized.

Finding Full Life Care’s Adult Day Health program brought everything together for my son and for me. Brian enjoys cheering for his favorite teams, staying active, and spending time with his friends. Adult Day Health supports his needs with so many wonderful activities.

Not having in-person activities during Covid was very hard for Brian. He needed more socialization than I could provide, and he started to experience more anxiety.

We were so excited with the reopening of in-person Adult Day Health. Brian’s anxiety has decreased as he’s once again spending time with his ADH friends and the Full Life team. He particularly enjoys the music and art activities that have been incorporated into the program.

I give to Full Life Care because I have witnessed the value of bringing a community together and the unwavering support given to my son as their client and to me as his mother and caretaker.”
