Mission

“Keeping the Northwest wild” since 1989, Conservation Northwest protects old-growth forests and other wildlands, connect large landscapes and vital habitats, and restore native wildlife from the Washington Coast to the British Columbia Rockies, we’re your voice for conserving wildlands and wildlife.

Description

Conservation Northwest thinks big, acts strategically, aligns with science, mobilizes grassroots support, and works collaboratively. Our work ensures that core habitat on federal and other public lands and strategically-located private lands across our geography is sufficiently protected and inter-connected into a regional network that can be self-sustaining.

We restore populations of native wildlife within this network.

Our programs center on oversight of public lands, conservation practices on certain private lands, and protection/recovery of threatened species, with components of both climate impact/relevance and racial equity and justice in as many programs as possible.

We recognize that for long-term progress, conservation must go hand-in-hand with healthy, prosperous and equitable communities. We’re restoring wildlands and wildlife by working with diverse stakeholders. Through dialogue, we find common ground and collaborative solutions for challenging issues including habitat corridors, wilderness conservation, forest restoration and endangered species recovery across our region.

Our three areas of work:

  1. Protect Wildlands- We defend large blocks of habitat that are essential for the long-term persistence of ecosystems and native wildlife. Conserving these core areas is critical for carbon sequestration and ecological adaptation in the face of climate change. We engage collaboratively to ensure that projects to create ecological adaptability are based on science and protective of large trees, watersheds, and other critical elements of Washington’s ecosystems.
  2. Connect Habitat- Our most distinct work is protecting habitat corridors that keep our Northwest ecosystems interconnected for wildlife to move. Large and linked blocks of habitat are the cornerstone of building resilience, and those linkages are often tenuous and at risk. We find innovative ways to both protect habitat corridors and build structures that provide wildlife safe passage under or over highways.
  3. Restore Wildlife- Diverse animal species make our region rich and vibrant. Thriving wildlife populations signal and sustain healthy ecosystems. We restore and protect iconic Northwest species including wolves, lynx, fishers, and grizzlies.
