Mission

We believe that all people, no matter where they live, should be able to cook their meals without harm to themselves, their families, or their environment. Burn Design Lab's mission is to improve lives and the environment in the developing world through the research, design, and development of outstanding improved cookstoves. With your help, we can design clean-burning cookstoves that provide people around the world with the long and healthy life they deserve.

Description

By leveraging the research, design, and development of innovative clean cookstove technology, we make sustainable changes in households and the environment. Our development process follows an iterative approach involving user input, engineering principles, and field testing. We gather results from tests and user research to feed back into the concept and design stages.

We design improved stoves with abundant input from local people and communities. The result is stoves that are actually used because they match the needs of the local customs and culture, and collaboration with local manufacturers creates jobs for people in some of the most impoverished areas in the world.

Efficient cookstoves are especially important to the lives of women and children because using a clean-burning cookstove improves the air that they breathe and reduces the time & money spent obtaining fuel. In turn, this increases the resources women have available for children's education and other empowering ventures. Reducing the demand for wood and charcoal as cooking fuels aids in stopping deforestation and improves water quality.
