Students should be focused on learning, not where they’ll sleep at night. But right now, too many students in Washington are facing homelessness—many youth of color who already face barriers to educational opportunity. Without stable housing, these students are more likely to fall behind in school, face mental health challenges, and lose hope for their future.

Building Changes ensures students and families have a safe and stable place to call home by advocating for smarter policies, building community-driven solutions, and bringing partners together to prevent homelessness before it starts.

In other words, we concentrate on what it takes to keep children, youth, and families housed in the first place, not just respond after they lose their homes.

And our approach is leading to lasting change. This legislative session we secured an important win for Washington students facing housing instability. We championed a new law that requires state protections to help students stay in school when experiencing homelessness—and it passed with strong bipartisan support!
