Our Mission
Found in 2022, Yun Theatre is a bicultural, experimental theatre company that challenges traditional norms and confronts social and political issues affecting marginalized communities. Our productions reflect the intersection of Chinese and American ideologies and aim to spark dialogue and contribute to positive change and social justice.
Our Name
Yun Theatre derives its name from the Chinese word 'yun,' which translates to 'cloud' ☁️ in English. In classical Chinese, 'yun' also signifies 'speak.' This name symbolizes our commitment to creating theater that speaks boldly and remains relevant. Like clouds connecting distant points in the sky, we aim to build bridges between cultures, fostering dialogue and understanding. The choice of 'cloud' also reflects our journey, starting amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, where most of our interactions occurred 'on the cloud.' We aspire to speak not by assimilation, but by delving deep within ourselves to offer a unique perspective. Yun Theatre is a platform for amplifying immigrant voices, humanizing individuals in a complex world, and celebrating creativity through theater.
Our Past Production
Yun Theatre's past productions have showcased diverse narratives that resonate deeply with our community. "Monologues of n Women," our debut, delved into the lives of Chinese women through interviews and creative collaboration, becoming a sold-out success. "Two Goldfish (Who Become Heroes)" explored themes of memory and freedom through an allegorical narrative inspired by global resistance movements. Most recently, "In Between: A Collection of Short Plays" brought together stories of migration and identity, selected from over 170 international submissions, to highlight the complex experiences of transition and belonging. Additionally, "The Gaza Monologues: a Multilingual Reading," a collaboration with eSe Teatro and Dunya Productions, presented powerful narratives in multiple languages, fostering cross-cultural dialogue.
Community Engagement
We invite artists from Seattle and other parts of the US to host bi-weekly workshops and events that are both educational and fun. From improv workshops to design workshops, our programming provides opportunities for participants to explore and develop their skills in a fun and supportive environment.
