South Whidbey Homeless Coalition

A nonprofit organization

Mission

We provide community members facing homelessness with shelter, resources, and advocacy, to create a strong and thriving Whidbey Island.

Description

After many community conversations the efforts of some amazing people, the South Whidbey Homeless Coalition was formed in 2014, and received its non-profit designation as a 501(c)(3) in 2015. Our mission was, and still is: To make homelessness a brief and rare experience in our community.

We opened the House of Hope in Langley in 2015, which operates as a 90-day shelter for families and single adults who are homeless or at severe risk of becoming homeless. In 2017 we opened a night-to-night shelter, The Haven, in Oak Harbor. The Haven is the only low barrier emergency shelter in Island County.

At the both The Haven and the House of Hope, guests find caring staff and volunteers who advocate for and walk beside them on their journey towards permanent housing and stability. While at the House of Hope, guests work to find employment, connect with social services, and settle into permanent and affordable housing. The Haven, as a low-barrier emergency shelter, assists a wide range of individuals with varying needs. We strive to provide services for all, including the chronically homeless as there are few programs available to them. However, priority is given to vulnerable seniors, families with children, persons with disabilities, and survivors of domestic violence.

The Whidbey Homeless Coalition also provides community education and outreach to raise awareness, inform the public, and engage community action to help make homelessness in our community brief and rare.

Recognition

All of this has been possible due to the generous gifts - in dollars, skills, and materials - from our local community. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.
