Mission

The mission of the Washington State Library Preservation Initiative is to ensure that the Central Library's collections are preserved and protected so that future generations can enjoy and learn from Washington State's rich history and culture.

Description

As an integral component of the Washington State Library and an arm of the Office of the Secretary of State, the Central Library is a vital resource for the state's history, culture, and information. Its extensive holdings document the illustrious past of Washington and beyond through rare books, official records, maps, genealogy tools, and special collections.

Students, scholars, and members of the general public have access to priceless artifacts housed in the Central Library's collection. The collection contains rare and priceless papers that are crucial to preserving the cultural character of the state, as well as resources that are critical to understanding the development of the Pacific Northwest.

The library also offers access to expert librarians who provide reference services statewide, support for genealogical research, school visits, public tours, and educational presentations. These services not only connect users with information but also foster a deeper appreciation for Washington’s history and its role in shaping the nation.

Call to Action

The Central Library is participating in GiveBIG this year with the goal of raising $10,000 to support the Preservation Initiative. Contributions will directly support efforts to:
•    Stabilize and preserve aging and fragile collections, including rare and historical documents.
•    Digitize high-demand materials for broader access and long-term preservation.
•    Upgrade environmental controls and storage conditions to ensure the safety of archival materials.
•    Invest in training for staff to use cutting-edge preservation techniques.
•    Expand public access to preserved materials through online platforms and in-person programs.

With these enhancements, we can ensure that the Central Library’s collections remain a vibrant, accessible resource for all Washingtonians while protecting them against the risks of time and deterioration.

Join us in this vital effort to preserve Washington’s history and culture. Your support can help ensure that these treasures continue to inspire and educate future generations.
