"A path toward higher social, educational, and economic mobility start with high-quality early childhood education."

Lin's story

This fall, Lin is starting kindergarten but she’s already at a disadvantage. English isn’t her home language, and while her family is loving and supportive, they don’t have the resources to fully prepare her for school.

In Washington, free state-funded preschool helps children build the skills they need. However, only families earning at or below 36% of the State Median Income qualify. Lin’s family works hard, yet they earn just above the limit, making her ineligible for this critical support. Without access to preschool, Lin is walking into her first classroom without the same foundation as many of her peers.

With your help and Washington Community-Based Education Center, WCBEC’s global learning approach, we can change that. Lin will have the opportunity to jump start, and prepare for success in a nurturing environment. She will discover the joy of reading through high-quality children’s books, build language skills through guided storytelling, and learn through play with intentionally designed educational materials. Most importantly, she will be supported by experienced early childhood education professionals who understand evidence-based teaching and learning.

In WCBEC's preschool, Lin will:

  • Learn foundational English vocabulary through songs, stories, and daily conversation

  • Develop emergent literacy skills

  • Practice social skills like sharing, listening, and working with others

  • Build confidence by expressing herself in a supportive, safe environment

Your continuous donations will also help us:

  1. Serves affordable part day preschool

  2. Provide high-quality early childhood education

  3. Quality teaching and learning materials

  4. Developmentally appropriate children books

  5. Global learning approach curriculums specialized on language, literacy, and culture

Mission and Vision:

We envision a world where every child grows with pride in their home language and culture while gaining the academic skills to thrive. By bridging families, communities, and educators, we strive to create learning spaces rooted in belonging and to build a path toward higher social, educational, and economic mobility. Our program will provide free half-day preschool sessions for children from immigrant and refugee communities in South King County.

Description:

Washington Community-Based Education Center (WCBEC) provides an essential cornerstone of early childhood education, children's library, and language and culture club. By creating an environment at the preschool level that instills a love for learning and literacy, the confidence to trust themselves, and the motivation to reach high, the students are well-positioned to succeed throughout their educational journey. Through active parental involvement, parents themselves build leadership skills to support and advocate for their children and one another. Through these programs, WCBEC promotes academic growth, cultural exposure and awareness, and strong parent leadership. Together, we lift shared goals and empower students to become transformative leaders in a globalized world.

Our specialized preschool program is designed for families seeking high-quality early education without the need for full-day care. A half-day schedule provides flexibility, with two-day and three-day attendance options to support a variety of family schedules. WCBEC utilizes an evidence-based early learning curriculum with a strong emphasis on a global learning approach, and empowering preschool children as they prepare for public education while supporting emergent home language development, literacy, and cultural awareness in a nurturing environment.
