Mission

TOJ’s mission is to help maintain a vital and diverse arts culture in Seattle. We accomplish this by offering and operating an affordable, sustainable venue dedicated to performance, art, and community. We amplify the voices of Seattle’s diverse artistic community by supporting new and established artists throughout their production process, and assisting them in achieving their unique vision on our stages.

Values

  • Theatre Off Jackson believes in empowering artists to tell their unique stories and the stories of our community.
  • We believe we can help artists develop and flourish by providing an environment where taking risks and trying new things is encouraged.
  • We believe that performance shouldn’t break the bank – artistic performance should be affordable for artists and patrons.
  • We believe that building pathways to opportunity requires broad, systemic change and TOJ wants to be a part of this change in the Seattle arts community.
  • We believe that our stages and audiences should reflect the rich diversity of Seattle and surrounding areas.
  • And finally, we believe in unicorns.

Description

Theatre Off Jackson is a professional arts venue presenting a broad spectrum of theatrical productions in the heart of Seattle's historic Chinatown International District. Theatre Off Jackson operates two spaces within its three-level facility. A 140-seat "main stage" is appropriate for theatre, music, film screenings, readings, fundraisers and special events. An open plan upstairs space, with a 75-150 seat capacity, is available for cabaret-style events that require table seating, as well as concerts and visual art exhibitions.

Theatre Off Jackson does not generally produce its own work, but rather provides space and technical support for a diverse and vibrant roster of artists to create and present their own work. Our annual season of productions and events is chosen by a curatorial committee, made up of artists and community members, that aims to reflect the creative flavor and demographic diversity of Seattle and of our immediate neighborhood. TOJ issues a Request for Proposal (RFP) to the Seattle arts community, proposals are reviewed and discussed by the curatorial committee, and applicants are selected to become "co-producers." Our space use agreements provide co-producers with front-of-house and technical support, including equipment that is up-to-date and well-maintained.

Recognition

This year, we ask for your support as TOJ enters a new era with new leadership! After 19 incredible years, founding Executive Director Patti West is handing the reins to incoming Executive Director Pamala Mijatov. Together, we are saddling up our unicorns and looking towards new horizons, new boundaries, and new frontiers. Help us celebrate all the possibilities that lay ahead in the next chapter of our story with a donation to TOJ during GiveBig 2024!
