The Storehouse

Mission

The primary purpose of the assistance provided to the community by The Storehouse staff and volunteers is to extend support to our neighbors who are struggling with, or are vulnerable to food insecurity. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for our clients beyond food security. We currently accomplish this through providing referrals, school supplies, holiday gifts, and weekend meals for children within the Kent School District through the Backpack Buddy program.

Description

In partnership with local grocery stores and agencies, The Storehouse has grown into a valuable community asset, distributing nutritional food and much needed resources to the community. Along with weekly food donations, fresh produce from The Storehouse Community Garden is also included with food distribution. In partnering with grocery stores, their food waste is reduced by donating to agencies and nonprofits such as The Storehouse. Additional services are available, including home delivery and referrals to other assistance programs provided by our volunteer Resource Coordinator.
"Love until they ask why" was the original motto of The Storehouse, extending love and support to those in our community no matter what their walk of life. This founding philosophy and the mission of The Storehouse is People Helping People. This is accomplished by meeting the needs of our community through food assistance, and in treating clients with dignity and respect. We establish an environment of inclusion and personal connection. From check-in to the time they leave, clients interact with familiar, friendly volunteers. During this time of COVID19, a greeter is there to wave a friendly hello and offer multi-lingual flyers as another point of connection.

Recognition

The Storehouse Board of Directors consists of Executive Director Liesl Kershner, Secretary Dave Kulp, Treasurer Debbie Hartsock, and board members Willard Nielsen, Gary Enders, Rob Guthrie, Ben Morley, and Rick Hayes. We couldn't make the impact we do without our incredible volunteers.
