Mission
The Seventh Wave is a BIPOC- and queer-led arts and literary nonprofit that invites writers, artists, activists, and creators to take part in a conversation surrounding the most pressing social issues of our times.
Description
Each year, we raise funds to raise new voices through our annual literary magazine, Community Anthologies, and digital residency programs. We want to reimagine what a literary magazine or an arts nonprofit can look like, and dismantle the systems and hierarchies that still exist within something that should be as accessible and fluid as art. Since 2015, we have published 17 issues, and elevated the work of 300+ writers, artists, and activists from around the world, 80% of whom come from historically marginalized communities, a statistic that is reflected in our masthead and staff. What unites our collective work is our shared beliefs:
-
We welcome and celebrate our community of individuals who come from historically underrepresented backgrounds and perspectives. We build our ever-growing and ever-evolving community for and with artists. We dig deep into the hard conversations that impact our lives, our environments, and our relationships to one another. We lower the barrier for the voices we believe in to be heard.
-
We nurture and champion the voices of those dedicated to their craft. People are the heart of our organization. We actively listen and learn in order to foster long-term relationships founded in trust and mutual respect. We strive to endlessly support and uplift creatives in order to provide a platform for expression, growth and pride.
-
We are building a long term, future-forward and sustainable effort. We believe that honest, thought-provoking dialogue has the potential to shift cultural paradigms over time. We make thoughtful and intentional decisions, knowledgeable of and responsive to the changing literary world. We are both independent and interdependent, leaning on one another to make the voices of those writing about social issues heard for generations to come.
