Tanzania Teaching Foundation

A nonprofit organization

In Tanzania, only 34% of eligible students enroll in lower secondary school, and just 4% make it to upper secondary. Many rural families live on less than $1 a day, making the cost of schooling—about $950 per year—an impossible barrier.

In 2001, Nancy Winters witnessed these challenges firsthand while teaching in a Tanzanian secondary school during a sabbatical from her environmental engineering career. She quickly realized that one of the greatest obstacles to student success was the transition to English-medium instruction. In response, she developed an English immersion curriculum, laying the foundation for what would become the Tanzania Teaching Foundation (TTF) in 2009.

Since then, we’ve helped over 500 students access quality education through targeted programs like our Pre-Form 1 English Immersion, which prepares students to thrive in secondary school. The curriculum includes STEM lessons on reproductive health, climate change, sustainable farming, and first aid, equipping students with both academic and life skills.

Your support helps unlock opportunity for students, their families, and the communities they’ll one day lead.
