Birds are some of the only wildlife you can see right outside your front door...

and they need our HELP!

When you don't have the time or resources to visit a zoo or wildlife refuge, birds are there: in gardens and parks, on feeders and fences, in trees, in vacant lots, perched on power lines, and nesting in eaves. At Tahoma Bird Alliance, we want to ensure birds are protected--to preserve the health of our shared ecosystem and preserve the everyday wonder of birding. Our community outreach, educational and conservation programs, free monthly birding walks, and legislative advocacy all work toward that goal--and you can help by supporting us today for Give Big!

Did you know we have lost at least 2.9 billion healthy adult breeding birds* in the United States alone since 1970?

That is one bird every 0.6 seconds or 100 birds a minute: POOF gone forever!

*Number does not include natural deaths*

Let's put that in perspective....

  • 200 birds while brushing your teeth
  • 1,000 birds while watching a 10-minute TikTok
  • 48,000 birds in an 8-hour workday
  • 1,008,000 birds while on a week-long vacation
  • 52,560,000 birds during a year of your life

These are unnatural and untimely deaths of breeding birds, birds we need to repopulate.  All of these losses are PREVENTABLE through education, conservation and advocacy.

At Tahoma Bird Alliance (TBA) we fight for birds in Pierce County and Washington through education, conservation and advocacy.

Education: through classes, presentations, in-school programming, walks and community outreach we teach our communities the importance of birds in our ecosystems, about the native habitats they need to survive, and the impact birds have on other wildlife.

  • Programs like Birdability, allow us to expand accessibility to birding and bird education to those with disabilities

Conservation: loss of habitat due to urbanization, logging and unnecessary fire mitigation is the NUMBER ONE cause of bird population decline. It is beyond important to conserve what little of native plants we have left and work as a community to restore what is no longer here.

  • 10,000 Trees for Tacoma is our pledge to giveaway 10,000 native trees over 4 years to community members in Tacoma with the hopes of increasing our 19% canopy cover to match cities like New York whose coverage sits at 39%.
    • In two years, we have almost reached half our goal with 4,600 native trees given away to date

Advocacy: it is no secret our woodlands are currently under attack by the Federal Administration. Therefore, advocating on the local, regional, state and federal level is more important than ever. TBA works with legislation at all levels advocating for higher protection of our forests.

  • TBA submitted comments on the Northwest Forest Plan Amendment, pleading for more protection of our ancient woodlands not less as the amendment proposed.
    • Using a creative and proactive approach our comments were flagged, with intentions they are read by a real bureaucrat, not AI

Did you know that environmental and animal welfare charities only receive 5.6% of annual private donations?!

Help us break that pattern and opt to SAVE THE BIRDS this GiveBIG!
