About Us

Sustainable Renton is a volunteer-driven non-profit committed to building a more equitable and sustainable future while fostering meaningful connections. Our mission is to foster a healthier, more sustainable, and equitable community by promoting environmental stewardship, food justice, and education. We work to ensure that all community members have access to nutritious food, sustainable resources, and opportunities to engage in meaningful environmental action.

Food Justice Initiatives

Sustainable Renton’s Food Justice Program collects, sorts, and redistributes food that would otherwise end up in landfills, providing essential support to more than 15 mutual aid programs in and around Renton. Our partners include local food banks, low-income housing complexes, community centers, and free meal programs.

We ensure nothing goes to waste: everything that can be saved is shared with our community, and anything that cannot be used is responsibly diverted to animal feed or compost, supporting a more sustainable and circular food system.

Greens For Good

Sustainable Renton’s Greens for Good program launched in May 2025 and has played a vital role in promoting sustainability across Renton by reducing food waste, supporting local agriculture, and building community resilience. We’re supporting local growers at the Renton Farmer’s Market by purchasing surplus produce that might otherwise go to waste. We redirect this fresh, nutritious food to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity through mutual aid programs all around Renton.

Our mission is to rescue as much surplus and unsold food as possible—keeping it out of landfills—while ensuring that local farmers are still paid fairly for their unsold products. Each year, millions of pounds of perfectly good produce are wasted in the United States due to cosmetic standards, distribution challenges, and market fluctuations. By bridging the gap between farms and communities in need, Greens for Good is able to reduce food waste, support sustainable agriculture, and provide fresh, healthy food to households who need it most. We’re committed to creating a more equitable and sustainable food system—and we believe in the power of community to drive meaningful change

Our mission is simple:

• Reduce food waste

• Support local farmers

• Feed our neighbors.

Community Education and Engagement

At Sustainable Renton, we believe an informed and engaged public is the first step toward real, lasting change. To us, sustainability means working with our planet. It means caring for our resources, our neighbors, and our shared future to build a safe and healthy world for everyone.

During our workshops, we dive deeper into topics like gardening, composting, food waste reduction, and sustainable living. These gatherings bring people together to build skills, ask questions, and connect with others who care about building a greener future.

By making sustainability fun, hands-on, and community-centered, we’re helping neighbors of all ages feel empowered to take action.

Food Forest Project: Building a Sustainable Future Together

Sustainable Renton's Food Forest is a vibrant, volunteer-driven project designed to educate the community about regenerative agriculture, provide long-term local food security, support native pollinators and restore the ecosystem. With young fruit saplings in place, we are working to integrate more berries, vines, perennial herbs, and nutrient-rich ground cover that can all work together to create a self-sustaining, regenerative food source for years to come.

As it matures, the Sustainable Renton Food Forest will provide locally grown food for our Food Justice Program, which will ensure it can nourish those who are facing food insecurity. This will also serve as an education space for people of all ages to learn how to foster a more sustainable environment in their own backyards!

Why Donate?

Donating to Sustainable Renton directly supports neighbors in need through our Pop-Up Pantries, which provide fresh produce, pantry staples, and essentials with no barriers, ID checks, or income requirements. Every gift helps families, seniors, and individuals facing hardship stretch their budgets, get meals on the table, and avoid difficult trade-offs between food, rent, and healthcare. Donations also fund food rescue, volunteer drivers, transportation, and equipment, ensuring that rescued food reaches those who can’t easily access it. Beyond groceries, contributions help create welcoming spaces where community members connect, build resilience, and feel valued. Your support strengthens a local safety net, reduces food waste, and turns compassion into real action, helping us build a caring, equitable, and connected community where everyone belongs.
