South Hudson Music Project (SHMP) develops, promotes and presents innovative musical collaborations crossing boundaries of genre, culture, generation, and neighborhood in order to strengthen and engage our community.
The South Hudson Music Project supports our community of artists through creative opportunities, fair compensation, and a welcoming performance venue. A great mix of performances at the Royal Room in Columbia City serves music lovers in Southeast Seattle and the city as a whole. Fall 2024 was a first--two festivals!--Staycation on Labor Day weekend, and in October/November, the What's Going On festival of 7 concerts celebrating the legacies of Sun Ra, Julius Hemphill, and Lawrence 'Butch' Morris.
Most of our events are not ticketed, to ensure accessibility--instead, admission is by voluntary donation. Almost every week, New Music Mondays presents improvised music, experimental music, and the outer boundaries of jazz, followed by the Jazz Jam.
Community Celebrations are the way to enjoy evening performances on MLK Day, Mardi Gras, Juneteenth, Halloween, and Charlie Brown's Christmas! And the Piano Starts Here series features artists performing tributes to piano masters from Thelonius Monk to Herbie Hancock, to Carole King.
Thank you for your contributions!
Special thanks to the Raynier Foundation, Live Music Society, Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, 4Culture, ArtsFund, and all our partners: The Royal Room, The Royal Esquire Club, Earshot Jazz, Jazz Night School, Jazz Ed and many others for their support. K&L Gates is our corporate sponsor.
