Description

sound-X is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization that nurtures the creation, performance, and dissemination of experimental art music through the curation, creations and compositions of Donald J. Stewart. sound-X presents opportunities in Washington State for performers and ensembles of international stature to engage new audiences. With a passionate commitment to the performance of truly modern music, sound-X is the glue that connects artists and audiences, devising immersive experiences in contemporary music, in intimate and personal venues.

sound-X enlists a nucleus of partnerships with prominent avant-garde musicians and local universities to help us realize our vision. Recent collaborations include performances by artists Richard Craig (flute), Magnus Andersson (guitar), Rohan de Saram (cello) and Garth Knox (viola) and the award-winning ensembles ensemble proton bern, Aventa and Quasar.

In February 2020, sound-X presented the Quasar Saxophone Quartet from Montreal as they toured Seattle and held residencies at Stanford University, UNAM (Morelia, MX) and ESMDM (Monterrey, MX). This tour brought many US premieres of music as well as a world premiere by Seattle composer Donald J. Stewart.

In March 2018, sound-X presented the ensemble proton bern in Seattle and Washington State as they toured the Pacific Northwest and California. The tour kicked off in Bern, Switzerland then crossed the Atlantic featuring performances at Western Washington University, Central Washington University, Seattle Pacific University, Stanford University, UC-Berkeley and C4NM, and included a world premiere of a new work by Donald J. Stewart.

For the 2019/20 season, sound-X began a performance series titled luX in partnership with the Josephinum and Christ Our Hope Parish. luX strives to become a beacon of light in downtown Seattle, presenting music of transcendence, mystery and light while reflecting issues of social justice.

In future years, sound-X will host four to five visiting ensembles annually, in partnership with Northwest universities, and its luX series of intimate concerts, thereby establishing itself as the beacon of truly new music in the Northwest and cementing Seattle's influence as a city of new arts throughout the world.
