Sound Experience

Aboard Adventuress, youth are needed. They work, learn and play as a team to raise the massive mainsail, stand anchor watch and navigate Salish Sea waters. Young people also learn to respect each others' similarities and differences. Our crew help to guide student learning about current issues in marine science and maritime skills. Most importantly, by living and voyaging together, young people learn about themselves – and they become shipmates. 

Sound Experience is a 35-year-old education nonprofit organization which operates the 133-foot, gaff-rigged schooner Adventuress. The ship is a National Historic Landmark and Puget Sound's official environmental tall ship. It is also a transformative on-the-water education platform. Programs emphasize environmental stewardship, leadership, community, career opportunities in marine science and the maritime world, and historic preservation. Aboard Adventuress, young people become aware of the issues affecting the marine environment in our region. For many young people, Adventuress has been a positive turning point in their lives.

Our programs reach young people who otherwise would have little chance to be on the water and to experience Washington State’s maritime environment. Programs for BIPOC, LGBTQ+ young people and other underserved youth are designed and delivered in partnership with community-based organizations and schools with inclusion and belonging at the core. Partners include Connect Casino Road in Everett, Urban League of Greater Seattle, Youth Maritime Collaborative, Seattle Skills Center and more.
