In 1973, Seattle and Tashkent formed the first Soviet-American sister city relationship in the United States. Despite the Cold War, Seattle and Tashkent developed close ties, forging lasting friendships that continue to grow and flourish today.

Led entirely by volunteers, the STSCA promotes citizen diplomacy and humanitarian assistance through educational, medical, artistic, and business exchanges, as well as local activities that share the culture of Uzbekistan and Central Asia with the people of Seattle and Washington state, such as our annual Navruz (Central Asian New Year) celebration.

Exchanges have included colorful official visits by mayors, deputy mayors, and city-council members, as well as people-to-people exchanges of teachers, schoolchildren, and university students, actors, healthcare providers, lawyers, journalists, and social-service professionals. We are creating new relationships and spreading an appreciation of Uzbek culture in the US and American culture in Uzbekistan.

Now more than ever, our long-lived ties are increasingly important as the basis for people-to-people diplomacy. The Seattle-Tashkent Sister City Association (STSCA) is a non-profit 501(c)3 citizen-diplomacy organization officially recognized by the City of Seattle and the International Sister City Association.

50-Year Anniversary

Next year marks the 50-year anniversary of the STSCA. We hope to honor this milestone with multiple activities and to lay the foundation for another 50 years of citizen diplomacy between the people of Seattle and Tashkent.

Recognition

We owe immense gratitude to the elected officials, civic leaders, volunteers, and ordinary citizens of Seattle and Tashkent who have believed in the possibility of citizen diplomacy between our two cities and have kept the relationship alive.

The STSCA relies on public donations to fund its work. This is YOUR sister city organization, and we deeply appreciate your active engagement and support. Katta rakhmat (Thank you)!
