A Unique Cultural Treasure Supported by Our Community
Celebrate 16 years of rhythm and community with The School of TAIKO, a one-of-a-kind cultural treasure deeply rooted in Seattle.
Founded in 2009 by Japanese immigrants, we have spent the past 16 years growing into an essential pillar of the regional arts scene. Today, we are proud to be recognized and supported by major public and private organizations, including 4Culture, Arts WA, Arts Fund, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, and Shunpike.
Our impact resonates throughout the Pacific Northwest: we currently serve 140 students and deliver over 80 programs annually. You may have seen our high-energy performances energizing fans at Climate Pledge Arena, Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park, supporting iconic teams like the Seattle Storm (WNBA), Seattle Reign FC (NWSL), and the Seattle Mariners (MLB). Through these partnerships, we are dedicated to bringing the spirit of Japan to the heart of Seattle’s sports and culture.
From Global Mastery to Local Innovation
Co-Founder and Artistic Director Ringtaro Tateishi brings 37 years of world-class experience, including a career with the legendary group ONDEKOZA and Walt Disney World.
This artistic excellence reached new heights during our recent collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) for the world premiere of "MOMOTARO" at McCaw Hall. The production featured three original compositions by Ringtaro, performed live to bring an immersive, thunderous energy to the ballet stage.
A truly defining moment of this success was seeing our youth members perform these complex pieces. Despite a very short preparation period, they achieved extraordinary results, proving their immense potential and dedication. Witnessing their growth on such a grand stage became the driving force behind our decision to focus on the next generation. It is their passion that has inspired our 2026 commitment to expanding our youth and young adult programs.
Empowering Every Generation to Shine
Our mission at The School of TAIKO is to create a sense of IKIGAI—purpose and joy—for people of all ages. We offer a unique sanctuary for lifelong learning, providing authentic, hands-on experiences for a diverse community spanning ages 5 to 80 currently. From inspiring the next generation through Pre-K to university outreach to empowering our middle age ~ senior members to lead and perform, we are dedicated to bridging generational gaps. Here, every member finds a place to thrive, ensuring that the health and connection of our community remain as powerful as the beat of the Taiko itself.
Our 2026 Challenge: Investing in the Next Generation Together
As we move into the 2026 season, we are launching a new challenge to expand our support for Youth and Young Adults. While maintaining our vibrant programs for all, we aim to work together as a whole community to nurture the leaders and creators of tomorrow. In an era of digital stress, your support helps us provide young people with "Human Power" and resilience. We believe that by supporting our youth, we strengthen the pulse of our entire multi-generational community.
