Mission

The mission of Rjs Kids is a reflection of Rj Ontiveros's core value; "I believe if we have the ability to help someone in any way, large or small, then it is our responsibility to do so."
Our current project is a result of a direct ask from the community - so we stepped up as no others had the skills to execute. Our organization is the administrator, fund raiser and manager for a tiered improvement project for the Vashon Park District that is partially funded by state and county grants.

Our Give Big Goal: Exercise Equipment for Seniors

The B.A.R.C has many activities offered at this point, but we would have noticed a void of options for seniors.  We would love to bring in two pieces of exercise equipment designed for seniors to be located near the pumptrack.

The two features we would like to install are the Skywalker and the Balance Spring:

Skywalker

  • Cardio workout that burns fat
  • Gliding motion with your legs is gentle on joints providing a hard workout.

     Balance Spring

  • Rocking platform placed in front of bar for holding on to, intended for seniors.
  • Balancing on the platform improved body control and balance, with a particular focus on the deep muscles.

Estimated cost for both the Skywalker and Balance Spring is about $8,500 to have them fully installed.

What we have done so far

We need help with funds for state and county grant match requirements.

Rjs Kids, with the approval of Vashon Park District (VPD) and the Vashon School District, is the administrator and fund raising coordinator for a current 2018 YAF Grant, a pending 2020 YAF Grant and a King County Youth and Amateur Sports Grant. This partnership with a Vashon based non-profit provided opportunities for outside funding for these combined projects. All the proposed and current improvements at the Burton Adventure Recreation Center (BARC) are a result of a direct ask from the community, based on the need for residents to have an accessible and inclusive activity center for all ages.

The BARC Phase 2, 3 and 4 additions will expand and enhance the existing park features to include an indoor skate park, outdoor skate bowl, volleyball area, outdoor ping-pong table, BMX and walking trails and a Frisbee disc golf course. The facility will ultimately be able to provide a tiered activity experience allowing for beginner and advanced skating users to develop and refine their athletic skills. With the completion of this portion of the BARC facility, it will now allow for competitive bicycling and skateboarding for ages up to 18 and be compatible for multi-generational use, including adult amateurs of all wheeled sports.
A barrier to access to physical activity on the island for the permanent residents are the costs associated with club sports. With the new standards of social distancing being implemented and enforced, the completion of the park is a priority for the community and the VPD. The design of the park allows for physical activities without the one-on-one contact associated with club sports. With the completed improvements of the BARC in Phase 3 and the additional features in Phase 4 with accessible walking paths and exercise stations, the park will provide physical activities for individuals of all ages and abilities.
