PACIFIC NORTHWEST NAVAL AIR MUSEUM MISSION STATEMENT
To connect the present to the past using aircraft, artifacts and exhibits that promote understanding of how we became what we are as a free nation.
DESCRIPTION
The Pacific Northwest Naval Air Museum is devoted to preserving naval aviation history on Whidbey Island, and the military culture that continues today. In the 1990's a small group of veterans and their spouses were inspired to commemorate the important role the PBY aircraft played in protecting the Pacific Coast in WWII. This unique amphibian aircraft patrolled the waters of the Pacific coast. She monitored the water for surprise submarine attacks and also performed water rescues. The museum actually has a PBY-5A Catalina on display. Her diverse role, along with other naval aviators are highlighted throughout the museum.
The museum displays artifacts, objects, photos and films. The brave servicemen who brought life to these artifacts are the focus of the museum. The human stories that accompany every aspect of the museum will provide a memorial visit to all. Along with the stories, are some interactive equipment allowing the visitor to experience such things as an original gun turret, 2 flight simulators and night vision goggles.
While the museum is a legacy to brave aviators, it is also a place of education, history, and arts and culture. A unique opportunity for touring groups to learn about the distinct history of Whidbey Island. The Pacific Northwest Naval Air Museum is proud to educate visitors and honor the brave servicemen that provided an important role in our nation's freedom. Donations to the museum will contribute to this well-deserved honor. Donations are needed to continue the process of operations in our new facility. This grand facility now needs to function with operations, including completion of interior, delivery of all artifacts and aircraft from storage, hiring and training of staff, utilities, inventory storage of equipment, budget and cost control, and customer service. There is much excitement and pride around this unique museum happeniing on Whidbey Island. Community support is badly needed for the operations in order for the opening to happen.
Currently, we are located in Oak Harbor, in a limited space, but we soon will be moving to a grand, purpose-built facility. Our new Oak Harbor location will be a short drive from the current address. We hope to be open at the New Museum by Fall of 2025. Stand by for updates!
