Orca Conservancy works on behalf of Orcinus orca, the killer whale, and protecting the wild places on which it depends.
Your GiveBig! donation will help fund -
1. SALMON RESTORATION: Support our two established salmon restoration sites on Big Soos Creek; an important tributary that flows into the Green River near the city of Kent. Big Soos Creek runs through suburban and semi-rural areas and is notable for its role in salmon spawning and rearing, particularly for Chinook, coho, and chum salmon, as well as steelhead trout.
Endangered Southern Resident killer whales survival depends on healthy, wild salmon populations throughout their entire range.
A. Once a cherished local destination for holiday tree selection, the BERRYDALE TREE FARM property at 15632 SE 288th Ln, Kent, WA 98042 has been repurposed into a salmon habitat restoration site.
B. The Cascade Water Management (CWM/CWA) Site strategically located at 15583 Southeast 283rd Place, Covington, WA, 98042 within the Soos Creek watershed, is a vital component of King County's water system.
NOTE: Big Soos Creek is an important tributary that flows into the Green River near the city of Kent. The creek runs through suburban and semi-rural areas and is notable for its role in salmon spawning and rearing, particularly for Chinook, coho, and chum salmon, as well as steelhead trout.
2. HYDROPHONES:
A. Support our established hydrophone located at Sunset Bay Beach Camp (Located halfway between Edmonds and Mukilteo).
B. Support our initiative(s) to place TWO hydrophones within Rosario Strait and off West Point Lighthouse.
Strategically placed hydrophones will ultimately alert ship traffic and recreational boaters of Southern Resident killer whale presence and to slow ships and/or boats down, thereby decreasing vessel noise. Data captured will also be shared for scientific and educational purposes.
3. Scientific Research
Support our research scientist, Chloe Kotik, who is working to provide data on the long-term effects of accumulated contaminants in transient killer whale populations and to further our twenty-five year legacy of holding corporations and government entities accountable and adhering to environmental laws and statutes.
