New Beginnings

A nonprofit organization

Our Mission

New Beginnings empowers survivors and mobilizes community action and awareness to end domestic violence. We envision a world free of violence and oppression, reflected in peaceful relationships and communities.

Founded in 1976 as one of the earliest domestic violence shelters in the country, we now offer a full range of services for survivors and an expanding portfolio of community education programs. As a survivor-led organization with roots in the feminist movement, we believe that everyone has the right to live free of oppression, to receive the same opportunities as others, and to exercise their own personal choice.

Services Provided

We support people affected by domestic violence. Our services range from helping to secure immediate physical safety to developing sustainable, long-term independence, through our survivor-led services, including:

24-Hour DVHopeline: offering immediate needs assessment, safety planning, emotional support, resource referrals, and an online chat function

Home Safe: providing transitional housing with 17-fully furnished apartments, rapid re-housing, and direct financial assistance

Trauma-Informed Services: including one-on-one advocacy, legal resources, mental health therapy, adult and youth support groups, parenting classes, and social service referrals

Community Outreach and Support: including events, training, and education, as well as educational social media and website resources

Break the Cycle: programming that includes youth advocacy and parenting support help children to heal from the experience of witnessing abuse, in addition to our teen prevention programs in 10 area schools to talk about healthy relationships.
