GiveBIG for every family’s right to thrive.

Real families. Real impact. Real change.

Mother Africa believes that a healthy environment is the foundation for a thriving life. But as the weather becomes more extreme, our immigrant and refugee communities often face risks with few resources. Our work through environmental justice programs is focused on building climate resilience and increasing disaster preparedness, ensuring families have the knowledge, tools, and support they need to stay safe.

We don’t just respond to crises, we advocate for equitable policies and bring community voices directly to decision-making tables, so no one is left out or behind as we navigate a changing world together.

The reality many don’t see

Behind every number is a story.

Families in our community are experiencing climate change in real, immediate ways, heatwaves, flooding, storms, and wildfire smoke. One community member shared:
“Storm hit my house which resulted in fence damage.”

Another highlighted how climate change impacts everyday health:
“It is not only an environmental issue, but also a serious health issue… affecting our skin and increasing the risk of disease.”

But many stories go untold. Some community members are afraid to share publicly. Others don’t have platforms to be heard. The stories in this campaign represent only a small portion of the people impacted, there are many more navigating these challenges quietly, and coming to Mother Africa for support.

A story from our community

Thandi, a farmer and mother, built a small farming system with other women, investing in sustainable tools like a biodigester and a cooler to store their crops.

When flooding hit, everything changed.

Water pushed their equipment across the land. Their biodigester, built with care and investment, was displaced. Their cooler, worth thousands of dollars, was dragged toward the river and damaged. Irrigation systems were destroyed. Supplies were lost. At the same time, Thandi and her daughter had to evacuate their home in the middle of the night.

“We were lucky to have somewhere to go… other people were not that lucky.”

Despite applying for support, resources were already gone. Today, they are still rebuilding, trying to repair what was lost and continue growing food for their community.

Stories like Thandi’s remind us how quickly everything can change, and how much it takes to rebuild. At Mother Africa, we are working to ensure that environmental justice remains a priority in funding and policy, because severe weather events are increasing, and our communities should not have to face these impacts alone. Through our work, we provide support, advocate for resources, and stand alongside families as they rebuild, recover, and move forward.

From stories to impact

These are not isolated experiences.

They reflect a larger reality:

  • Immigrant and refugee families facing climate disasters without enough support
  • Communities rebuilding on their own
  • Systems that don’t always reach those who need them most

At Mother Africa, we work to change that. We provide support in ways that center dignity, trust, and safety especially for those who cannot share their stories publicly. We turn lived experiences into action, advocacy, and solutions that are led by the community itself.
