Humble Design serves individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness by transforming their empty house into a warm, welcoming and uplifting home with donated furniture and household goods. Across the country, Humble Design warehouses are curated and stocked by design teams that personalize homes by providing a dignified, life changing experience for clients and providing them with a fresh place to start.
Humble Design works with families who are exiting out of homeless shelters by providing them with furniture for their new home. We work with our clients to personalize each home to meet the exact needs of the family-providing a home in which each family member will thrive. We provide children with school supplies, toys, books, and other essentials to help them to live productive lives. We also support caregivers by providing household essentials, such as dishware and cleaning products. This transformation -from empty walls to a home- creates a feeling of pride, hope, and comfort, allowing the families to focus on their personal and financial stability, including education, home life, employment, and building a better future.
Since our launch in Seattle in 2018, Humble Design has served 52 families in King County and the surrounding areas, which includes 119 children. On average, 50% of families that enter permanent housing after being homeless without Humble Design transition back into homelessness within one year. By contrast, less than 1% of families who receive Humble Design services do so.
During the pandemic, Humble Design volunteers and staff have pressed forward to furnish the homes of those who needed it most. And while stability at Humble Design has always been represented by a cozy bed, this year it also took the form of desks and school supplies. We knew that each one of these children deserved the same opportunity to succeed at remote learning as their classmates. We are continuing to serve our families helping them to feel safe, and providing them with support so that they can keep their families healthy during this challenging time.
