Friends of Fisher House Puget Sound

Mission

The Mission of the Friends is to ease the burden of military and Veteran families during a difficult time. While patients receive medical care from VA, military, and other local hospitals their families are able to stay at nearby Fisher Houses at no cost. The Friends support four (4) Fisher Houses in Washington State - located at Seattle, JBLM (2), and Vancouver by providing goods and services not normally provided by the VA and DoD.

Description

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military and veteran families in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation and local communities join forces to build "comfort homes" on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. The four (4) Houses supported by Friends, located at Seattle, Joint Base Lewis McChord (2), and Vancouver, Washington, provide a “"home away from home”" for families of military members and Veterans receiving care at VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Madigan Army Medical Center and the VA Medical Center at Portland, Oregon or through the VA and DoD at other area facilities. Guests are able to be near their loved ones while having a comfortable, peaceful place to find rest and support for themselves. More than a convenient and beautiful place to stay, the guests of Fisher House share common experiences, form friendships, and become a unique kind of family, a Fisher House family. The Friends is governed by an all volunteer Board of Directors.  Administrative and fundraising costs equal 15.3% of revenue.
