Meet Alivia
Alivia, a single mother, was living in her car with her young daughter, Willow, while working full-time for a cleaning company. Despite her best efforts, the cost of housing made it nearly impossible to find stability. Some nights she could afford a motel room, but more often she parked in safe places and tried to make things feel normal for Willow. The emotional toll was immense, but Alivia held onto the hope that something better was possible.
That hope turned into action when Alivia called the Council for the Homeless Housing Hotline. Through that connection, she met Brian from the Outreach Team, who works with young adults experiencing homelessness. With no rental history, Alivia faced barriers, but Brian used a one-time financial assistance approach called diversion to support her. Within just a few weeks, Alivia and Willow moved into an affordable apartment with help covering move-in costs and rent.
Having a stable home brought immediate change. Before moving in, Alivia noticed that Willow was struggling emotionally. She had begun having frequent accidents, even though she had been potty trained for some time. The instability and stress of their living situation were affecting her behavior at daycare and at home. But after settling into their new apartment, Willow’s anxiety eased. Her confidence returned, the accidents stopped, and her days became more predictable and joyful. For Alivia, having a front door to lock and a place to rest has meant everything. She now feels safe, is pursuing a promotion at work, and hopes to return to school for her GED.
Alivia’s story shows the impact that fast, thoughtful support can have on a family’s future. It’s because of donor-funded programs like this that she and Willow are safe today. The need in Clark County is still urgent — but your support can ensure more families find the same stability and hope. When people have a home, they thrive — and the whole community thrives with them.
Our Mission
At Council for the Homeless, our mission is simple and urgent: to prevent and end homelessness in Clark County. We achieve this by connecting individuals and families to housing, equipping service providers with essential resources and skills, and engaging the entire community in meaningful solutions.
Why your gift matters
Your gift to Council for the Homeless ensures people like Alivia and Willow receive the necessary resources to make home possible. Through the generosity of our donors and community partners, together, we find solutions to preventing and ending homelessness.
The story of your impact is so much greater when you consider:
- Children who experience homelessness are more likely to stay in a cycle of homelessness as an adult.
- The longer someone experiences homelessness, the more complicated their situation becomes.
- Homelessness is expensive. Costs add up when you cannot store food, cook, meet basic hygiene needs, and do laundry in your own home.
Your impact is deeply felt by the people we serve:
- “I finally feel safe again.” Mary
- “I can cook dinner for my family. Kids can do homework at the dining room table. It may seem like a little, but it is a lot to us.” Bonita
- “I never thought anyone would really help me. I’ve been out here so long. But things are looking up.” Glenn
Your compassionate gift will help people experiencing homelessness in our community. We hope you will join us and make a life-saving difference for people facing life without a safe and stable place to call home.
