The Children's Discovery Museum (CDM) in Cowlitz County offers a dynamic opportunity for children to participate in a rich and educational environment through 25 hands-on interactive exhibits. These specific exhibits are designed to fall into one or more STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) categories. Through play children have the ability to take ownership of their learning and to develop and explore their own interests. This unique exposure provides the foundation for creativity, critical thinking, and connection to the world around them. CDM offers a place where families can engage, play and connect together in meaningful ways.
Keeping it Free
Having the Children's Discovery Museum FREE, is imperative when 25.7% of children 0-4 and 21% 5-17 years in Cowlitz County live in poverty. Poverty and socio-economic status are correlated with lower test scores and reduced academic achievement.
Making a Difference
According to Project Zero, Harvard University, access to hands on learning increases test scores and greater academic achievement. Also only 25% of the children in Cowlitz County meet the necessary kindergarten readiness skills compared to WA State of 46%. This is based on 6 domains, (physical, social/emotional, communication, critical thinking, creativity and cultural awareness). CDM offers hands-on educational learning experiences within each exhibit for children to learn and grow in all of these domains. Education becomes key not only for learning, but for getting a better job and making a better income.
We also do not duplicate any services currently provided in our County. CDM is utilized by many agencies within the community who refer parents/children to participate at CDM.
