Arts Impact pairs professional artists from the community with classroom teachers to create culturally grounded arts integrated lessons in math, science, social studies, reading, etc. When students learn in and through the arts with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of complex concepts through creative pathways, they thrive.
Currently, low-income students, especially those from Black, Indigenous, Latinx and POC families experience the greatest barriers to culturally relevant, high-quality education in our public schools. Decades of national and regional research shows that culturally responsive arts integrated teaching strategies are highly effective in engaging students, building 21st century skills (such as perseverance, creativity, critical thinking), and establishing deep connections with academic content. Despite this, data shows that students of color, those experiencing poverty, and students who speak English as a second language have the least access to an arts integrated education both nationally and in our region.
Arts Impact invests in teachers to provide culturally responsive professional learning in the foundations of the arts and in integrating them into other academic subjects. Training teachers to infuse the arts into daily learning ensures that children receive sustained artistic pathways throughout their education. Since 2011, independent evaluators have proven that Arts Impact's model of arts infused learning closes gaps for low-income children of color.
